IPMA-HR Supports Gender, Sexual Orientation Protections Under Title VII

The Association on April 25, 2019, wrote the bill’s chief sponsor to support the Equality Act (S. 1006). The legislation would amend Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit employment discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.

The letter to Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) states, “Applicants and employees should be hired and evaluated solely on their ability to perform. A national standard that ensures non-discrimination is needed."

The letter further notes that hiring and retaining sufficient numbers of public safety personnel demands protecting individuals from discrimination. “If government is to provide the vital services their citizens depend on,” the letter states, “they cannot afford to exclude potential employees based on sexual orientation and gender identity.”
