What Are the Best (and Worst) Places to Work in the Federal Government?

The Partnership for Public Service has once again ranked federal agencies and offices by degree of employee engagement. The 2018 results for 488 organizations come from a total of 847,000 survey responses.

Among large agencies, the top three in 2018 remained unchanged from 2017, and each retained its place on the list:

  • NASA
  • Health and Human Services
  • Commerce

Interestingly, the lowest-ranked large agency, Homeland Security, saw the second greatest increase in overall score. This advance reflected incremental improvements on nearly every component of the engagement score such as effective leadership, pay, teamwork, support for diversity and performance-based rewards and advancement.

The other top-rated agencies and departments are

  1. Federal Trade Commission (Midsize Agency)
  2. Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (Small Agency)
  3. Office of the General Counsel, FERC (Agency Subcomponents)
