Technology tools for managing information, communication, productivity and analyses have been available to corporations and the military for many years. Technology is now being integrated on a large scale into our government agencies and schools with significant investment of public funds. Consequently, organizations find it necessary to adopt policies defining and ensuring the acceptable use of these new resources just as they have traditionally adopted guidelines for the use of vehicles, telephones, and other resources. Kentucky’s school districts, for example, require that the parent, student, and/or teacher sign an acceptable use policy before the student is given access to a full set of technology tools. The Kentucky Department of Education has determined that it is time to adopt a staff policy for acceptable use of electronic information resources and technology.
