Black History Month 2021
Celebrating Black History Month has taken on renewed importance. In the past year, many events occurred affirming that progress towards racial equity still needs to be made in this country.
As the first Black executive director of IPMA-HR, I bring my lived experiences to inform and help our association as we continue to drive that progress. Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are a core value for IPMA-HR. Outlined in our strategic plan, we are working with subject matter experts to develop training and opportunities for learning and connecting around DEI. As I stated in June 2020, it is up to us to make change happen. I believe we have the tools and the desire to reach out and be better.
Public Sector Human Resources professionals continue to be on the front lines. It is our duty to support our staff, employees, and agencies in moving towards change. It is our duty to listen to those most affected and make changes within ourselves. It is our duty to affirm: Black Lives Matter.
What can you do right now to foster change?
- Facilitate the hard conversations among your employees
- Review your policies for unconscious bias
- Be alert to microaggressions in the workplace
- Educate yourselves and employees racial equity issues
- Reach out to Black community organizations to get input on the issues facing your agency
